Whole Year Curriculum
Math
Monday through Thursday, students will be taught in rotations. Small groups will rotate between a teacher station, a Homework/Remembering station, a craft/activity station and a game station. This year the third graders will learn: Multiplication/Division, Multi-digit addition and subtraction, Equations, Solve word problems, Polygons, Area and perimeter, Fractions, M-STEP practice/techniques. Each day, before the math lesson, students will be given a multiplication time test. Different levels will be reached for each individual child. Students will be able to master multiplication numbers 0-12.
Reading
Mini-lessons will be taught throughout the week and students will be given the opportunity to practice the strategies learned on their own. Monday-Thursday, students will read on their own for approximately 30 minutes. Small groups will be assessed based on their reading levels. Every child should read 10-20 minutes every night at home. Remember, the more you read, the better you get. So read, read, and read some more with your child! This year third graders will learn: Reading Strategies, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Traditional Literature, African-American Study, and Poetry.
Writing
Mini-lessons will be taught throughout the week. Students will keep their writing in their writing notebooks. Their final copies will be collected into a binder in order to show their writing growth from the beginning of the school year to the end. Third graders will learn: Quick Writes, Personal Narratives, Fiction stories, Compare & Contrast Elements of a Story, Holiday Writing, Opinion Writing, Research Brochure for International Day, How-to Essay, Poetry:Figurative Language, Creative Writing, and Partner Work Stories.
Social Studies
This year in Social Studies we will incorporate activities, projects, and discussion in the curriculum. Students will be required to participate in classroom discussions. This year, students will be learning about: Geography Map Skills, The Constitution & Bill of Rights, Economics, The History of Michigan, Timelines, Indian Research, Three Fires, Legends, The Growth of Michigan, and Public Issues facing Michigan Citizens.
Word Study
Word study will consist of words that students receive weekly and will be tested on every other Thursday. Students will also complete lessons in their Wordly Wise book consisting of different activities that will be completed individually or in partners.

Mrs. Szachta will be our students’ Science teacher who they will see three times a week. Students will learn about: Forces of Motion, Magnets, Fossils & Dinosaurs, Weather and Climates, Animal Adaptations for Survival, Life Cycles, and Heredity Traits.
